The first thing that pops into my head when you describe what sounds like
metal scratching against the wheel, is that perhaps your brake pad(s) are
worn down to the sensors and need to be replaced. Though, if that were the
case, the scraping would probably be constant. It would still be a good idea
to check the brakes pads to determine their condition. Good luck.

Wheel bearing, perhaps?

I agree that it must have been the worn brake pads. You said also that there is a scratching of metal when you accelerate.Have you checked the http://www.subautoparts.com/subaru-cv-boot/ (Subaru CV boot)? It must to be checked also.

If there is a dust shield, have them look at it. Sometimes it's just as
simple as bending it back away from the rotor. Smile I had almost exactly the
same noise on my '02 WRX and in that case it was just a bent dust shield..
fix was basically a screwdriver for leverage and a quick push.

i also notice a soft metallic whine that starts around 4,000 rpm. (no,
it's not a turbo.) it's easy enough not to rev that high, but i still
wonder if it's a problem, or if i'm damaging something? and sometimes
it's fun to wind it out a little closer to redline. (it IS marked as
6,500!)

I think I have experienced both of these noises. I had the exact
experience as teh first noise and thought it was brakes, so I replaced
the pads. I thought it was odd that they still had life on them
because it sounded like metal on metal. So I figured tht maybe the
light scratches ont eh rotor might have somethign to do with it and
had it turned down. The sound persisted though. Then my ABS would kick
in when I was braking and turning in one direction regardless of how
hard I was braking or how slippery the surface was.

It was the wheel bearing. The bearing was allowing enough play that
the speed sensor was getting too far from the toothed ring and
thinking that the wheel had locked up.

The other noise I would not describe as metallic, but more of a
whistle like a turbo car. So it might not be the same, but it also
only happens at higher revs, and also on my car only at WOT. But I
narrowed it down to the plastic intake tract where the air enters
behind the leaing edge of the hood, then goes into the fender. It had
warped with age and created a bad seal with the piece it mates with in
a manner that caused a whistle. I took off that piece and it went
away, but then put it back on since I like the turboesque sound.

Good luck,
Bill
