water pump

My 88 volvo 740 gle is pushing fluid back through the over flow, and
there a rattling noise coming from the front of the engine. could this
be a water pump problem

Yes, it certainly could be. Grab the fan and try to wiggle it, if there's
any play in the pump shaft, the pump is bad.
