It's some kind of bracket on the 2002 Corolla, which has a single wire going
into the wire harness and is apparently supposed to be grounded on top of the
engine there? ( but it appears a stud fell out at that point, which was part
of the engine top cover ) This photo is on the driver's side, right above the
PCV valve there.

This bracket and connector were dangling down to the side of the engine
there.

It does not matter what it is. Put the screw back in to fasten it down.

Dang. Clean your engine compartment. Looks horrible. Use simple green and
a hose.

That could be just a support for an unused connector, a ground for the
wiring, or a diode in the plastic body that has its anode attached to the
chassis ground. Just put the bolt back in.

Wow, the old valve sure looks clogged up good!

I would drive by a Toyota dealer and just ask for some free advise on
what it's for and where to reattach it properly. Like the others
mentioned, to looks like it could be a ground wire. You may be asking
for a bigger problem if you don't follow up on it.

Drive by the dealership? For what? There is a hole that is supposed to have
a f---ing bolt right under the hole in the bracket. It does nto matter what
it is, it works. All that matters is that the bolt be put back in, and that
apparently does not matter because Jane has been driving around for
God-knows how long with out, and it still works.
