Well, that's kind of a novel diagnosis. Ticking noises usually come from exhaust
leaks and the valve train. Usually.
The first thing to do is locate the noise a little better. Get a 3' piece of
vacuum hose. Stick one end in your ear, and use the other end to locate the noise.
That works surprisingly well.
As for the $3K bill, that's absurd. Depending on how well built this engine is,
and how much drag racing you do, the parts are only about $400. That's a flywheel,
pressure plate, clutch disc, bearing, and all new bolts. The whole job shouldn't
take more than 3-4 hours. I think your mechanic is not as competent or honest as he
should be.
