Alright my 1984 el Camino is making a tapping noise. It is a 305 crate
motor put in one year ago. Starting last week it began making a tap tap
tap sound. It is louder in reverse, but is still heard in idle. Local
mechanics are a little help. The best explination I found was a craked
or loose flywheel. 3 thousand dollar quote to replace. The transmision
was rebulit to fit motor. Any ideas of what else it might be, or the
best way to go about replace a flywheel?
thanks kyle wolf

Well, that's kind of a novel diagnosis. Ticking noises usually come from exhaust
leaks and the valve train. Usually.

The first thing to do is locate the noise a little better. Get a 3' piece of
vacuum hose. Stick one end in your ear, and use the other end to locate the noise.
That works surprisingly well.

As for the $3K bill, that's absurd. Depending on how well built this engine is,
and how much drag racing you do, the parts are only about $400. That's a flywheel,
pressure plate, clutch disc, bearing, and all new bolts. The whole job shouldn't
take more than 3-4 hours. I think your mechanic is not as competent or honest as he
should be.
