Post subject: steering shaft

I believe that my steering shaft in my chevy S-10 4X4 is loose. Something rattlles when I ride on a semi bumpy road. When I take my wheel off, I can reach inside grab it and move it. It sounds like the same noise and i can also feel the rattle under my left foot while I am driving. Is this serious? How do I fix this problem? It has a plastic casing around the shaft.
