Bryce/Sampey reunion a 'reality'
It appears the reality TV phenomenon sweeping the nation for a second time
(thanks to the ongoing writer's strike) might have played a small part in
three-time champion Angelle Sampey signing on with Klement Racing and
rejoining team crew chief George Bryce, whom Sampey won her three
championships with back in the day.
Already the most prolific female drag racer in history with 41 national
event victories, Sampey's next milestone is Dave Schultz's Pro Stock
Motorcycle class record of 45 wins.
Confused? Well, here's how a potential NHRA record and reality TV intersect.
"A TV producer called me and reminded me that Angelle needed to win just
five more races to enter into the record books as the winningest rider in
history," Bryce said. "The producer said she was trying to sell a TV show
about Angelle's life called 'Devil on Two Wheels' to several networks. The
networks liked the idea but wondered if it was possible for her to win five
more races in the length of time needed to put a decent show together.
"Well, Angelle and I only took home two Wally's in all of 2007 -- one
each -- so at that rate the TV show may take five more years to come true.
So the producer said, 'George, do you think you and Angelle could race
together again? And would you win more together than apart?' I said 'Yes, I
would hope so!'
"It's tough out there now but I believe we will win more races together than
when we're racing against each other. To be honest, I hate racing against
her. The reason we were so successful together the first time was her
undeniable competitive spirit and drive, and I'm the same way."
Under Bryce's tutelage and tuning prowess, Sampey won three straight
championships from 2000-2002. Since parting ways, neither Bryce nor Sampey
have won another title.
No word on if the TV show will become a reality now that the dynamic duo are
back together but I promise you the rest of the Pro Stock Motorcycle class
is already watching every move these two make.
