It says some new safety innovations might make drivers less alert and
cause accidents.

there have been studies and there are even 'terms' used to describe
paradoxes like this. 'Risk homeostasis' etc.

Some of the risk that drivers have had forcibly reduced by g'mint
mandated things like seatbelts and airbags has been transferred to
occupants, pedestrians, bicyclists etc. who did not volunteer to take
on more risk. basically, the subconscious awareness you have of being
'safer' in your car MAY translate to you driving more carelessly. That
puts others at higher risk.

Imagine how carefully you would drive if there were an 8" sharpened
steel spike aimed at you in the center of your steering wheel!

"8" sharpened steel spike"

In the book "VW Guide for the Compleat Idiot" the author lauds the VW
bus layout, saying "everyone would drive more safely if they were
strapped to the front of the vehicle like an Aztec sacrifice".
