The rumors of Ashley Force hanging up her firesuit in the wake of her
father's accident at Texas Motorplex in Dallas are absolutely false. Even
though she was upset after watching her famous dad's wreck as it happened
from the top end of the racetrack, Ashley was ready to race Cruz Pedregon in
the semifinals.
She would have entered the tilt with lane choice, so she could have been
looking at her first final-round appearance. But after talking things over
with her mom, crew chief Dean "Guido" Antonelli, and the rest of her team,
she elected to join her mother, Laurie, and drive to the hospital in Dallas
to be by her father's side.
The fact that Ashley is not a part of the Countdown to Four played a big
role in the decision, along with the fact that initial reports from the
racetrack had her father in much worse condition than he turned out to be.
Personally, I applaud Ashley's decision. It's not like she's just a hired
driver; she drives for her dad for goodness sake. I can't imagine trying to
perform under the pressure of NHRA competition knowing my father had just
been carted away in a helicopter with serious injuries. Drag racing is
great, but one's health and family should always top the list of priorities.
