The October 'Co-operator' mentions checking the u-joint nuts for being
overtight, as it could lead to trouble. Geez, I never thought about this
and was hoping someone might remember how much torque to give them.
Thanks!

Would this be a 20 year old grunt and groan or a 40 year old grunt and
groan?

1953 shop manual, (the only one I have) on page 3 of Torque Specs, under Propeller shafts (it's a boat?) and universal joints, says 20 to 22 ft-lb. My torque wrench starts at 20 and I'm not sure I trust it that low, I use one grunt and a groan.

I had to leave for a while and didn't get to finish this post. I want to
add..........you'll play hell using a traditional torque wrench there
anyway. So just be sure the cups are seated fully and use a regular-length
box end wrench to tighten the nuts pretty much as tight as you can.

To be technical about it, and assuming you are on stands or a hoist:

1. Tighten the nut quite snuggly,
2. Use a ratchet and a pipe extension on the handle.
For 20 foot-pounds (or pound-feet, if you insist) hang a 10 pound
weight on the pipe two feet from the socket, with the bar sort of
level*.
If the nut turns, repeat the step 2
3. When the weight stops dropping due to tightness of the nut, you have
your torque.

* You can use a 20# weight on the bar one foot from the socket, of
course.

This all ignores stiction, so give it a good wack!
