Ouch! That hurt.... - Just paid the bill for the 'big' cambelt service and MOT on the 156. Anyone care to guess on the size of the bill? (Cambelt, 60k service (minus plugs, they were done last time) and MOT) 'Prace bets now!' -- SteveH 'You're not a real unless..

Where can I try out my 156 2.5L V6 - I keep thinking I want to see how fast my 2.5L V6 Alfa 156 can go without getting nicked for speeding. Are trackdays - wherever they are? - suitable for this? I just want a safe to give it a bit of a thrash. Has anyone got any..

Battery 156 - Just got a battery for my 156 from Halfords & asked for their £5.00 to fit service - at the time they couldn't fit me in, so I figured - how hard can it be? and tried the job myself. My modest set of tools were not to get to the bolt

Alfa 164 200,000Km service schedule - Can someone please direct me, where i can find online, the shedule for 200,000Km service , for Alfa R 164 3.0L or can someone provide, list of items that are required, e.g. change oil & filter etc TKS in advance tonyg

Wing mirror plastic - Anyone know where I might get a body colour coded drivers side (RHS) door mirror casing. It was kicked off by drunk kids last year (the same kids that keyed the whole car the previous year) and has been held on with tape ever..

SWMBO was driving to work today when there was 'a bang and a cloud of
smoke' and a 'bit of a loss of power, but it drove OK, but there's a
funny noise'

2 x AA men have looked so far
1) Clutch has gone and hit gear box (! nice to know they are as ever
well trained. Last one I had refused to take anything off the bike as
'fairings can break')
2) Gearbox is gone. Not quite sure how it can be 'gone' since it still
changes gear and she managed to drive OK for several miles.

My money is on either bearing or gear disintegration.

Other theories? Hideous cost projections?

My 156 2.0 TS lunched 5th gear...very unpleasant. The bearing looked
like it had collapsed and that allowed enough movement for the gears to
strip...all the swarf jammed the box. Had to have the gearbox stripped,
gear and associated bits changed, a new clutch put in (since it was all
in bits anyway) and rebuilt...£1000, but there was a lot of damage and
it took a lot of labour time. Independent garage too. On the plus side,
the car drove better than it ever had before!

Good luck and hope it's not as serious.

I ended up spending about £1750 on it to get the gearbox fixed, radiator
fixed, and the front suspension fixed...then traded it in three months
later and got £2500 for it (against a GT)...

It's only money...

50 - 100 quid for a second hand box.

Plus the cost of a new clutch (may as well do it whilst the box is
dropped)

4 hours labour.

I dunno - 400 quid, tops?

Well, if it's just box internals, then I reckon I'm not far off.

All depends on labour rates, I suppose - but when my 33 chewed it's diff
bearings, I had it swapped for 75 quid, on top of the box, which cost me
another 75.

When the 75 box did the same, I had it rebuilt with parts from my 2
spares for 500 quid.

I wouldn't have time or know how. If my PC does the equivalent of blowing a
head, or chewing its own gearbox, then sleeves up and here we go, but not
cars - I understand them, but would never trust my work if I tried things
myself! Trouble is, the PC is cheaper to repair!

I didn't do it myself.... I got a man in Wink

Local gearbox specialist took the 2 used boxes from me, removed the
knackered one from the car and built a good one from all 3, using new
bearings where appropriate, though.
