ht4100 V8, '86 FWD

Any tips on changing the starter? I see a bolt in the front, and there
must be one in back. Is there going to be a problem getting to it?

Three bolts attach the unit to the bottom of the block, one on each side
of the mounting flange and one at the rear mounting stud.. Disconnect
the Neg (-) lead on the battery/raise car/remove the solenoid wire and
battery cable. Working underneath this low-slung car is always a
'pleasure' (ahem!!). Dealing with the AC compressor is even more fun
than the starter! When it comes; I'll understand your pain.....

I just finished the job. And for the sake of Google, I'll describe it.
It's more difficult than an average starter, but it's not beyond the
abilities of a typical back-yard grease animal.
The wires can't be confused because they have connectors with hole-
diameters that match the bolt-diameters.
The two bolts (there were only two mounting bolts; I wonder if we're
talking about the same engine, Dave) that secure the starter are the
difficulty. In the beginning it looked like it was impossible to get
the back bolt. The long on goes in the rear. The shorter bolt is
actually a two shaft bolt, with one shaft, the smaller, coming out of
the head. I don't know the name of these bolts. Anyway, a bracket for
the AC dryer (I think it's the dryer) hose goes on this two-shaft
bolt.
Because of this bolt, the job would be a bit easier with deep sockets,
but I got by with just not sinking the ratchet drive fully into the
socket.
The HT4100 is transverse engine, so the the starter is in the front
part of the engine compartment. In a way, the configuration makes it
easy to get to the starter. I used a floor jack to set the left front
wheel on some boards.

It's remarkable an eight cylinder engine can be fitted sideways in a
car. Whoever designed it (I'm sure it was a team) deserves credit.

I mis-posted. I was including the Neg battery cable as a mounting bolt.
I have the same engine, only in the '87 year model.

My next job on that car is the water pump replacement. I'll start a
new thread.
