My bet. See my answer to the other guy3 with the 7M-GTE engine problem. I
gave him a lot of resources.
If I had to make a guess, I would say it's the speed sensor. Is the OD/OFF
light flashing? If you have the OD off, then turn it ON and see if the
indicator starts flashing.
Here's a '90 repair manual. The codes are the same.
To get back on track, the speed sensor in this car is built into the
speedo, and senses the movement of the speedo and feeds it back to the
trans ECU. If the speedo isn't spinning up, there is no feedback to the
ECU and it won't shift. You'll have to disconnect the ECU and put the
trans in limp mode, no third gear and you may have to shift manually (the
US spec trans goes 1st, 2nd, OD in limp mode.)
There may be a way to modify this trans to accept a cable instead of an
electronic pick-up, but that's beyond me. See one of my answers to the
