Post subject: need help on trans.

i have a 87 supra automatic that had a burnt up trans. so i replaced it with a jdm auto trans of the same model but with less than 50,000 miles on it . ok here is the problem. i have 1rst and rev. gears, but it will not shift into any other gear. this newer trans. had a electical speedo and the one that came out of it was cable. would this be a problem , or is there something else that i'm not seeing. Crying or Very sad

well the spedo will not have any effect on the gears. did you look at the cluch an see if any springs are broke this can stop you getting gears.

My bet. See my answer to the other guy3 with the 7M-GTE engine problem. I
gave him a lot of resources.

If I had to make a guess, I would say it's the speed sensor. Is the OD/OFF
light flashing? If you have the OD off, then turn it ON and see if the
indicator starts flashing.

Here's a '90 repair manual. The codes are the same.

To get back on track, the speed sensor in this car is built into the
speedo, and senses the movement of the speedo and feeds it back to the
trans ECU. If the speedo isn't spinning up, there is no feedback to the
ECU and it won't shift. You'll have to disconnect the ECU and put the
trans in limp mode, no third gear and you may have to shift manually (the
US spec trans goes 1st, 2nd, OD in limp mode.)

There may be a way to modify this trans to accept a cable instead of an
electronic pick-up, but that's beyond me. See one of my answers to the
other guy for more resources.

I would have gone with a 5-speed, myself...

It would have been better if the replacement transmission was the same as
the one that came out because the replacement may not be compatible with the
transmission ECU.
