Hi to everybody who like talking about cars!
I’m from Russia. I’m interested in everything that is connected with
automobile. I’m doing the comparative analysis of the automobile terms in
Russian and English. Along with the terms there are the words and word
combinations (so called conversational equivalents of the terms) used in
speech of the people connected by the same profession or line of work. For
example Russian drivers call the steering wheel – baranka (small wheat loaf
in the form of a ring) ‘cause steering wheel resembles it in shape. Another
example: the lower part of the bumper is called skirt.
I guess in English you also have such words or expressions which you use
in conversational language talking about the cars. When communicating it’s
impossible to use terms all the time.
If it’s not difficult for you, share your ideas with me. I’ll be very
grateful and appreciate your help.
Thanks a lot for reading this message.

Are you just looking for commonly used automotive terms that you can in
turn translate?

We'd like to share, but you did not ask any particular question. I understand your concept that different names are used for various parts of a vehicle. We can't go over the whole car here on one post. I suggest that you keep monitoring the groups and ask when something puzzles you.
OK, here's a couple though. That little brush that goes between the window and the body of the vehicle to keep out dirt and debris is called a "cat whisker" by old timers in the body shop business.
A tire can be called a donut or a balona skin if it's bald. There you go. A "bald" tire is a tire with little tread. An odometer is cometimes called a "clock."
