Does it tend to show something more about us, or him/them?
In some respects it is a good thing to not have a lot of time to obsess on
the instant access to a forum.
This may be a blessing to wean oneself off of it.
The only reason I see it a lot is I have it on my opening routine on the
'Net, so it opens to this forum (and that forum).
But, since my time is measured in 15 minute increments, I have to
immediately pass to the next item/crisis/opportunity of the hour.
If 'they' cannot provide a regular service, they are going to lose all but
the most fervid/rabid of the 'net based hobby.
Complaining? No way!
I miss it too, as y'all are a kind of extended family (even you grouchy
argumentative bastards (you know who you are <lol>).
Should the forum run with nuclear powerplant efficiency?
A good question, but thinking along those lines, did'ja ever see a Stude run
24-7 for years?

Just wait for all the pats on the back Bob will get for bringing the forum
back up... not one word will be said about it going down... again. I've
given my advice on how to handle the situation, but why listen to me, I just
do this sort of thing for a living.
I was thinking last night of all of the "regulars" on the newsgroup who have
little or no involvement in "the forum". There are people from here that I
haven't heard from in nearly two years... including most of the people you
see at the Tri-State Meet. If they do show up on the forum, it's only to
post one message and disappear again.

You know darn well there haven't been any "pats on the back" the last
two times it went down.

Nor should there be, but in the past there has been. I've also notice that
there haven't been any explanations for the outages either.

The same could be said about your opinion.

The usual smart comments about how things should be done spouted by those
who dont plan on doing anything about it.The position to run the forum will
be up for grabs when Bob's contract is up.Any guesses on what excuse we will
hear why somebody wont apply for the job?

I gave my solution to the problem... which I can 100% guarantee would
resolve any of these current outages that we can almost set our watches to.
The recommendation was ignored.
I just might toss in a bid, just to see if they bite... let's guess an
average 8 hours per week x 52 weeks a year x $75/hr. = $31,200 plus yearly
hosting fees plus $27 membership dues. Make it an even $40K and I'll
consider it. When do I have to have my bid submitted?

Guess we're stuck with what we have until 1/1/2011.

What I think is 'interesting' is your use of the word 'stuck' and the SDC's
use of the word 'entertained', and 'as determined by'....
None of this is new, and IIRC, you vocalized a bit during the previous
webmaster change.
The position is not an elected one, but a selected one.
It has been pretty out in the open, so alternatives not presented don't
carry a lot of weight (with me anyways)..
But then, I don't want the hassle of trying to herd SDC cats on a forum, or
website.

I've asked the SDC Secretary for the job requirements (before I found this
online) and the accepted bid amount. Rumor has it that the SDC is paying in
the ballpark of $50K/yr. for this service. I've got a friend who does very,
very professional looking websites (he and his wife are graphic designers)
who I'm sure would do this job for less than $50K/yr. I'm going to have to
remind them of this bidding process when it comes around again... just to
verify for myself that there is a good ol' boy network in place at the SDC.
I'd be interested to hear what Bob does for this reported $50K/yr.. The
forum is pretty much self-maintaining, I guess cutting and pasting in a few
ads in the Classified section once a month takes some time, maybe cutting
and pasting an article into a couple other areas too. If this site was
hosted on a commercial hosting site, there would be no backup or hardware
upgrades to attend to. I'd be surprised to hear that Bob is spending more
than 10 hours/month on this site... not counting the time spent reading the
forum.
