Professional qualifying format to change in 2008 POWERade Series
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1/16/2008
Given the significant impact weather and atmospheric conditions have had on
qualifying for NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events in past seasons, NHRA
has modified its race qualifying procedure.
Beginning with the CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway
at Pomona, Feb. 7-10, the top 12 elapsed times in each pro category will be
provisionally recorded prior to the last day of qualifying. Those teams who
were unable to earn a provisional spot in the top 12 will have an
opportunity to make the 16-car starting order during the final day of
qualifying.
While the 12 provisional times are officially recorded prior to the last day
of qualifying, those positions are not locked-in. All teams will have the
opportunity to improve their positions during the final day of qualifying
and can bump in or be bumped out of the field.
"There are no guarantees with this system," said Graham Light, senior vice
president of racing operations, NHRA. "If you are one of the 12 quickest
cars, you can still be bumped out on the final day of qualifying, or you can
improve your position in the order. However, if weather conditions change
and become less optimal and as a result the performances are not as good
throughout the field, the four quickest cars from outside the provisional 12
on the final day of qualifying will complete the 16-car lineup."
The field of 16 for each of the four professional categories will be set at
the conclusion of the final round of qualifying, using the traditional
16-car race bracket for eliminations.
"We feel this new qualifying format will heighten the intensity for each and
every qualifying session throughout the weekend," Light said. "We're certain
it will make the racing on the track even more entertaining for fans."
All qualifying elapsed times will count in the Full Throttle Pit Crew
Championship standings as well as towards national records. The Full
Throttle Pit Crew Championship awards the top-performing pit crews in each
of the four professional categories at each event as well as a year-end
champion. Teams are rewarded based on performance and consistency during
qualifying runs, with points deducted for quarter-mile passes that result in
oil on the racetrack. >> Stay informed about: Once more in english, Please? |

This is quite simple, really. <rolling my eyes at NHRA>
If the final day of qualifying doesn't happen due to weather, the ladder is
the fastest 12 and the next fastest 4. That way, we have a 16 car field.
If the final day of qualifying does happen, the ladder is those fastest 12
and the next fastest 4 unless someone from the fastest 12 gets bumped down
or out by the next fastest 4 or their previously slower than all 16 who can
bump anyone.
Sounds like lawyers got involved ;^) Jeezzz....

I don't really understand where the difference is from this new format to
the old format, which I thought worked very well.

Old way: The 16 quickest cars race for eliminations on Sunday.
New way: The 16 quickest cars race for eliminations on Sunday.

I have this recurring vision of the NHRA bigwigs sitting at a yearend

But doesn't that happen now anyway???
I am sorry if i sound dumb, and believe me I am not being smart here, but
(under the old rule) if the final qualifying round is cancelled for whatever
reason, then the current top 16 fastest times will qualify to race. Isn't
that the same as the top 12 + the next 4??

Again it sounds exactly like last years qualifying except there are a number
of legal angles pasted in just to make it sound confusing.
I think your right Bill. perhaps the lawyers needed some extra cash, or
someone in NHRA Admin had to justify their job by twisting some rules
around.

My "<rolling my eyes at NHRA>" was my best effort to let you know I was
being sarcastic without saying so. No, you're not dumb. It sure sounds
like the same system to us all. Well, maybe we're *all* dumb and just don't
get it.

Not that I agree with all of this... but this method prevents the cars in
positions 13-16 on Friday night (who under the old system would have been in
Sunday's field unless someone bumped them out on Saturday) from not
bothering to qualify on Saturday. In other words, what has happened in the
past, especially with the carb cars, night qualifying usually got the
fastest times and most the time nobody got bumped on Saturday.. this system
gives the 4 lucky teams that weren't qualified on Friday to get in 'during
the day' with possibly slower times then those that were holding 13-16
positions on Friday night. Hope that helps...

So,
Spots 13-16 are tossed if there's Saturday (or Sunday at USNatl's)
qualifying, and cars compete for the last 4 slots and jockeying in general.
OK, I get it, my hand's up, I was indeed dumb on that one.
Thx for the alignment ;^)

Let's see, how can we look dumber than NASCAR? And now we
have it. Changed qualifications, and changed significance of
the last four races. I blew off NASCAR for going with "the
chase". Now my fav motorsport is trying to p*** me off too.
Can't we just leave things alone. "If it ain't broke don't
fix it" certainly applies in this instance.

I think that it was broke. At many races if you did not qualify on
Friday night you were not in the program Sunday. This will give the
people watching on Saturday some suspense as to who will get in. >> Stay informed about: Once more in english, Please? |

I tend to agree. However, I think it is ALL aimed at the TV coverage
and since it was very rare (specifically in P/S and P/S Bike) for
anyone to bump in on Saturday the TV broadcast was often boring. I
think it is all about the ratings.

If you should see me walking
Through your dreams at night
Would you please direct me
Where I ought to be
I've been looking for a crystal ball
To shed the light
To find a future in me...

That's a good point.
But then why would they not have a Saturday Night qualifying run as well?
this would give the teams 2 night qualifying sessions, or even 3 if they
include a Thursday night qualifier.
Just a thought?

Yes the Friday night is a fan pleaser, but that's how you get Friday
attendance when people get off work. Generally, fans are off on Saturday
and the night draw is not needed.
