My experience with Hampton Lane Garage, BS6 6LE

I got my alternator changed from this garage. Fussy mechanic, kept
complaining to me about the difficulty he faced changing the
alternator!!. He was rude and imprecise while giving me the quote. The
breakdown guy had checked the alternator, it was making noise and was
almost seized but not broken. The garage showed it to me in broken
(cracked) condition when I went to collect car after repairs. Charged
me a surcharge of £60.

Also charged £ 72 for labor. Charged £102 for recon alternator instead
of £70 quoted initially. Total rip-off. Stay away. Con Garage!!!

Assume you are talking about a Classic Mini not the BMW Copy?

Try DSN Classics website for price comparisons.

£45 for exchange and only £20 surcharge if yours is not serviceable.

They take about 30 minutes to fit yourself - even if its raining.
Experienced mechanic should be a lot faster.

I would challenge this bill. £174 for an alternator seems a bit steep
to me. Perhaps a UK mechanic could come on here and defend that sort
of charge. I couldn't.

Hi People,
Pedro is right ,,
in my area I could purchase a re-con alt fo aprox £45
and charge £20 total labour,
Fitting procedure is ::
remove grille, unplug wiring socket, remove 3 bolts and fan belt,
Reverce this process and thats it,, 20 mins work at most

It is! I changed alternators four times in just over an hour on Friday
(spare alternator onto working car to test it, second spare as one was
dud, original alternator back onto car then working alternator onto
faulty car). My local shop (not the cheapest but he knows what he's
talking about) charged £42 inc vat for the exchange alternator (which he
had in stock too).

Even at main dealer labour rates it shouldn't come to much over £120.
