But in many cases, old cars are worth more to a junk yard than to an
individual who needs a car to drive! My SO sold her Chrysler van with a
blown transmission for $600 to a junk yard (it was actually in decent
condition other than the transmission, but it did have 190,000 miles). Other
than a junk yard or a mechanic with time on their hand would want something
like that?

One big issue ( in states that require safety inspections) is
whether it has a recent inspection. People with sense will pay more for
a ratty old car with a fresh inspection than for one that will need to
be inspected and may fail, requiring Big Bucks to get it to pass. If the
inspection is new or recent, I'd say it's worth $995-$1200. If not, then
if you think it will pass, see if you can get it inspected. Otherwise
$700 isn't far off.
