I recently had this problem with my '89 240SX, and it works a little
differently. The default state for the brake lights is on. A button
about the size of a nickle (but thicker) turns them off when the brake
pedal is in the released position. My button broke (the pieces were
in the floorboard). I was able to use a bolt and nut to replace the
button, and all is well again (at least with the car).
Good luck,
Tracy
