Post subject: old bmw tranny problem !!

i have a 1986 BMW 635csi and i have a problem. every time i come to a complete stop and accelerate again it feels like my car is stuck in first gear, it gets up to 4000 rpms then changes gear. it never used to do that and i can tell its not good. i dont have alot of money or experience with transmissions. any help please !!!
