Noises are difficult to diagnose without hearing and experiencing them first
hand. Also, you are better off checking parts before replacing them.

Front end clunking noises can come from a variety of sources, like ball
joints, struts, strut mounts, CV joints and halfshafts, sway bar bushings,
rack ends (tie rod ends), loose rack, control arm and control arm bushings,
splash shields, loose battery or other component, aftermarket brake
components, improperly mounted wheels, damaged tires, steering stops, etc.

Check all of those components, and if you cannot identify the source of the
noise, have the car checked by a competent technician.

Dude, you can drive yourself nuts (and broke) doing this!
Is there anyone you know that can take a look? In Mass when they do an
inspection they jack the front wheels off the ground, put a bar underneath
the tire and pull up. If they say there's a ball joint gone, there's a
ball joint gone!

One of the signs of a bad ball joint is if you crank the wheel all the way
to one stop or the other and hear a creaking coming from the front corner
of the car. Not always, but every time I've had a bad ball joint it's made
this sound.

CV joints (axles) usually make a combination grinding/clicking sound, but
a ball joint sounds like something being pried apart...because basically
it is...

Good Luck...
