Archived from groups: alt>autos (more info?)

Hi, i have a v w caravelle 2.5 derv. i have experienced trouble with
the auto transmission it seems to lock up in 3rd gear and will not drop
back into 4th. i have had the gearbox taken out and completly
recondictioned and found that the problem is still there, after many
searches on the web and talking to many other gearbox garages, we have
changed the oil in the gearbox, and fitted a very large oil cooler to
the gearbox and found that the problem has gone, phew. it has nearly
driven me to dispair, the vw has only done 80k it has been serviced
every 10,000 miles by a vw garage, the year of the vw caravelle is
2002, i have only been the driver of the vw and consider myself to be a
very carefull driver, i would be very interested to find out if any
other person has had this problem or something like it. DELBOY
.

If the trans uses a temp sensor, this may be stopping the upward
shift. With a hot (overheated) trans or bad sensor, the temp sensor
stops the trans shift until it cools down. The oil cooler may have
solved that.
