Ford has experience with the problem you describe with this new
transmission.
There is a snap ring on the upper area of the transmission, I believe its
for low pressure reverse, and should the snap ring release reverse gear is
slow in engaging, it will engage, just slow. Prolong use of the
transmission in this condition can and will cause the case to crack and loss
of fluids will result.
I have a 2005 F-450 on the fleet that has suffered from the cracked case
with 800 miles/1280 KMS. Ford's Oasis has this issue onboard and your local
Ford dealer can search for this problem.
My servicing Ford dealer even suggested that Ford was going to do a "quiet
recall" on the 2004-2005.
With the F-450 in this issue the replacement transmission was pulled "from
the line" in order to have the vehicle back into service.
