I have a 1964 chevy C-10 I would like to restore.
I do not have the original engine or transmission. What constitutes
original? I would like to put fiberglass finders and hood on it, maybe
some carpet and some other modern updates. Will that devalue the truck?
Also my door handles and windo cranks and just about all other chrome
pieces are scratched or pitted. Do I have to get the pieces from an old
truck or can I buy new pieces? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are putting on fiberglass fenders and hood, then the engine
isn't important as with fiberglass it is not a proper restoration.

If 'originality' is important it must have the original type steel
body parts. Then I'd figure that it had originally a straight six with
a three speed. But that's a WAG.

If you must go fiberglass, then any chevvy motor is find, say a 350. I
would also drop in an automatic at the same time.

You have to decide what you are trying to do. On one end of the world,
there is the top end fully restored collectible vehicle. It must have
all the original parts with appropriate serial numbers where applicable.

On the other end of the world, there is the daily driver. It can have
any parts that seem appropriate to the owner. A 50 Chevy five window,
converted to 12 volts with an electric windshield wiper, an add on
heater, disc brake conversion, he original closed drive shaft replaced so
you can make the rear end taller and add an overdrive transmission, and a
later 235 would be about the best 50 3100 you could have. (I'm not
familiar with the newer, i.e. mid sixties Chevys.)

If you are trying to make money by the restoration, you would probably be
better off spending the time working on a real estate license.

I am restoring a 64 SWB stepside myself. There were very few "luxuries" like
carpet and such back then. I am trying very hard to find original parts and
some are having to be fabricated. There are several suppliers that still
stock the parts you are needing.

Hello,

There is a question you have to ask yourself? This would be do you want to be comfortable in the truck or do you want to show the truck?? IF you want to be comfortable in the truck then make it the way you want. If you want to show the truck then try to make it as original as you can. If you dont have the original engine I would just make the truck the way you want it. These trucks were not made for comfort so if you want it to be comfortable you need to do a lot of work to make them that way.
If you need to know how to restore it or just do upgrades get online and look at all the references that are there for you. Just punch in 1964 chevy restoration and start reading.

Good Luck

That was around the year than GM was starting to change over 6's from the old block 235's to the newer 230, 250 and 292. I would need to research exactly what year they changed to be 100% sure. As far as V8's go, the old 283 made it into a lot of trucks back then and a very few got 327's. The transmisson for a 2 speed powerglide automatic or a 3 on the tree or the old SM420 4 speed. I would suggest a 283 and a powerglide if you want a nice stock 64 type truck with a automatic for restoration or show. The old 283 warmed up real nice, ran great and had a nice sound too! Do not let their size fool you as they could run! Anybody can put a 350 in one but a serious person will try to use a engine of that era. 283's were made until 67 and powerglides into the mid 70's. It you cannot find a 283, take a 307 block and put in a 302 crank. 327's were also made up to about 68 in performance models and they are easy to make today beacause you only need to use a 350 block with a 307 crank and 327 pistons. Hope this helps.

In my opinion fiberglass will devalue your vehicle. The rest is personal
taste and I doubt it would devalue your vehicle. Either way, nobody really
gets their money out of a vehicle once they restore it anyhow, so I wouldn't
worry about devalueing it. Do it the way YOU want, because if you don't
you'll be wasting your money no matter what you do.

I think the crome peices can be re chromed, so you shouldn't have to find
replacement parts.
