I could easily just be a weak battery.

If you're handy with a multi-meter (5 quid from Maplins), you can check the
voltage. IIRC, 12.7V is a good battery, 12.6 weak and 12.5 poor. Test while
the engine is off. Fire up the engine and check that the voltage is
immediately higher; say somewhere about 13V, but It will drop to way below
12V while cranking. The voltage rising above 12.5-12.7 with the engine
running will confirm your alternator is okay. The lower the figures, the
weaker the battery.

Betcha it's just the battery to replace.

Good luck,

I'd imagine it's just the alternator (diode pack ?). The battery has
eventually weakened itself by not being charged enough, and won't turn the
starter.

As Paul said - get a voltmeter on the battery - a good voltage on charge is
just over 14 volts usually (ish).
Since the charging light is on continuously, then this'd seem to confirm the
charging cct, but till you test it properly, you'll just have to wait and
see.
