Have a punto sporting 1.2 16v and on start up on cold mornings the engine gives a very loud knocking noise until it heats up.any body come across such a problem

Do have a Punto Sporting 16v (2000) also. Same problem over here. Seems to
be one of the hydraulic valves. I think it will not harm as long as you
don't rev up when the engine is still cold. Mine has done 67000 kms and
still running fine!!

They also making a knocking noise on startup when the rubber belt between the engine and alternator has warn out.
