I am going to put the engine back into the Avanti this week but I
haven't bought the plugs or wires yet. What should I get? It's an R1
with a Harbit cam, pretronix ignition, edelbrock carb, and R3 valves.
Are the J9Y plugs and packard wire from SI the way to go?

I like the spiral wound wires from MSD. Very low resistance and don't seem
to have radio noise worse than other types.

Actually I believe J12Y plugs are standard for a R1/R2, you will
probably end up using RJ12YC (basically the same) a J9Y might be too
cold for tooling around town.

With a pertronix you might be able to open up the plug gap a little,
although I have no experience with that. I'm running a MoPar "orange
box" on my car and opened the plugs up to .040" with no apparent ill
effects.

I don't know what wire SI sells but I can tell you that Brian Scott
makes a nice wire set, Ray F, JP and others sell it.

How much do a set of those wires cost and how do I go about purchasing
them?

I strongly recommend the Scott Performance wires sold by several Stude
vendors here (as mentioned by Nate's post).
They FIT RIGHT, and are made of the highest quality material, and assembled
with care here in the USA.
I have seen the manufacturing facility, and can attest to the quality.

Which set? Without the original message you are replying too, we don't know
which of several sets mentioned you are referring too?

If they do, I might just have to set my principles aside and buy a set!

nate

(but there *are* US-made fiberglass ones and for that I am thankful!)

What you say thar' yankee transplant boy???

Youse infewwin' that fwiendly Chinese pwoduct infewiow???

'membew, we 'ave a few home made ICBMs in yaw diwection... Bettaw tweet
us nicewy aw ewse.....

Seriously, BS's wires are terrific and a welcome relief in the "buy it
made in the USA" category.

JT

Incidentally, while shopping for a new hard drive a couple of weeks ago,
I chose a Seagate simply because it had a three year warranty rather
than the one year offered by most others and cost a little more.
Imagine my dismay when I got home and discovered the freakin' thing was
made in China! We're gonna pay dearly in the future...

We're already paying (dearly I might add), most of the imported computer
stuff IMHO is pure garbage, the unfortunate part of it is that companies that
had manufacturing/assembly facilities in the USA,made a quality product way
back when, have overseas plants now, build it cheap, six months later go buy
another one.

This is especially true with motherboards, etc,as whatever electronic parts
are used are made in mexico,el salvador, etc.poor quality component
assembly, cold solder joints,s**t power supplies,it goes on and on.

Being in the computer industry over 22 years, and phasing that part of my
business plan out over the next year,I'm not sorry to say that quality is
almost to the point of being extinct, beyond that, let's not start on the term
"trade deficit"

What we need is an automatic OT header macro that plugs itself into a thread
whenever JP or JT intentionally steer it off topic <g>

Imagine my astonishment a few weeks ago, when changing the automatic
tranny fluid in my 98 Jeep Cherokee. I bought a new filter at NAPA, got
home, drain the fluid, pulled the pan and old filter. Opened the filter
box and pulled the filter out. Stamped right on the filter, MADE IN
VIETNAM. !!!!@#$@#@. Next time I'll ask the guy at NAPA, if they have
some non-communist filters for the Jeep.

Now I'm sure that JR's post will end up costing me somehow<G>.

Just for edification of the masses, the sets made that Ray, John, and Phil
Harris(Ted Harbit takeover) are 7mm wire wound suppression core with a plain
black silicone jacket. We use black silicone spark plug boots with snap
ring stainless terminals. Distributor boots are EPDM with brass terminals.
This is for Studebaker 6s and 8s as well as the Packard 352. We do not yet
have the "correct" cut for the Mckinnon 283 in the 65/66 years. Any one
interested in a FREE set for that information?

I will be happy to answer any questions, except "can I buy a set direct?".
No, we do not retail. The majority of my business is custom racing wire
sets for all types of applications working with engine builders. We do
motorcycle(HD), off shore boats, Bonneville racers, road race, mud boggers,
tractor pullers, drag race, circle track as well as some street
performance(Callaway Corvette/Mustang/LS1) and restoration type
work(GTO/GN/Studebaker). Variety is the spice of life. bs
