Post subject: parking brakes 98 4Runner 4WD
Archived from groups: alt>autos>toyota>trucks (more info?)

I have a strange problem with my Runner. It seems that my parking brakes
are not fully releasing when I disengage them after driving through some
water last night during a really bad rainstorm. The water came up to mid
wheel or about. They worked fine before the rain, but this morning when
I was backing out of my driveway, I noticed some resistance. I figured I
would drive around the block to see if it would get better. It did not.
When I arrived back at my house and stepped out of the truck, I smelled
something burning. I jacked the truck up and attempted to hand turn both
rear wheels but I met resistance. They would not turn freely. I could
even hear the brakes squeal or grind a bit as they rubbed. I did have my
wife engage the parking brake while I looked at the cable and it looks
like it engages and releases fine on both rear wheels. What the heck did
I do to this thing? Any ideas?

TIA
