question about the monte carlo rally.....

.....in one of the rally reviews, one of the managers said something
like, "the monte is the rally everyone wants to win"....

is there a reason? what makes this one a favorite among some of the
drivers as opposed to the tour de course or catalunya rally?

It's the rally with the greatest history, maybe the only one also
known to the general public (i.e. non motoring fans).

Of course it is now reduced to the standard FIA World Rally Formula
(only three days, no night stages, etc.) but it still retains a
peculiarity: you can have ice and snow as well as dry tarmac in the
same daywith the obvious repercusions on tyre choice and car setup.

[And don't forget that, in the Principality of Monaco, tobacco (and I
think alcohol) advertising _is_ allowed, so that cars take the
ceremonial start in full livery only to revert to "sanitized" when
they cross the French border]
