Don't feel bad, the 1.8T and 2.0 actually get more or less identicle gas
mileage, that's one of the reasons the 1.8T is such a great engine. Only the
TDi would've been more fuel effcient, and it's understandable why you wouldn't
want that slug to drive everyday.

Umm the TDI is not a slug.

Compared to a 1.8T it is Smile Of course compared to a 1.8T a lot of nice
cars are somewhat slug-like...

0-60 in 9.0 + seconds from a compact car isn't sluggish to you? The 1.8T Jetta
gets very good gas mileage and is capable of 0-60 in 7.1 seconds with a stick.
The TDi may be "useable", it's certainly not any slower than the average SUV.
But it certainly won't make anyone's heart race.

I'd love to get 9 seconds from my Diesel... ive got the old 4 speed
automatic TDI - I probably just break the 10 seconds (ie under 11 but more
then 10) with my PSI tuning box.

They are not good in a straightline, but they will pull relentlessly right
up to top speed, they're not any worse to drive then the 2.0L - better at
over 120kph I think - and you don't have to downshift all the time when you
want to pass.

0-60 in 9 sec. in a car that also gets 65 MPG (Cdn) gets my heart racing.

There's certainly something said for economy, but that's a little ridiculous.
The Toureag TDi V10 is amazing, great gas mileage, awesome torque and 0-60 in
under 8 seconds. But it's also $55k. And no other Deisel I know of can match
it's performance.

Don't worry, I don't feel bad... Wink

And FWIW, I would have preferred a TDI, but my wife really wanted the
1.8t/5spd. I was driving an A2 diesel jetta at the time, so the TDI felt
like a ferrari in comparison.

Aw quit your complaining (;^D)...the only way my 52 HP or 48HP diesels could do
0-60 in under 10 seconds is if I drove them off a cliff.

I have been doing a daily commute in a diesel for 25 years, and rarely has
acceleration been an issue.

with 118K miles logged on my '99 Jetta TDI, i would hardly consider it a
slug on the highway. an older Audi Quattro yesterday on Rt. 13, met his
stoplight grand prix match in me, on frequent highway stoplight restarts to
65 mph. i had no trouble either staying right with him or leading him out
from a dead stop. and this with the 90 hp engine. and with a one stop fuel
strategy, i smoked him in the longer ride home...
Mike
50 mpg in the TDI offsets the 18 in the Touareg!

WTF are you smoking? Great mileage? That's bullshit.

17mpg for a passenger vehicle using diesel (or gas for that matter) is an
abomination. Even it's claimed 23mpg highway is a horrible waste of fuel.
Sure, it's "less worse" than a likewise equipped Hummer or Land Rover but
it's ludicrous to try calling it "great gas mileage".

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/20379.shtml

In comparison somnething like the Jetta TDi wagon gets 36/47 and has upwards
of 30 cu ft of storage with the seats upright. The Touareg has nearly the
SAME storage space and is nearly two-thirds WORSE in it's fuel consumption.
Sure, the 0-60 and torque on the Jetta are nowhere near as robust but for
most situations they're more than enough. Certainly more than enough for
what most people need.

Heh, a similar line got me out of a traffic speeding ticket. I said to the
judge, '75 mph in a Beetle? On hilly terrain?' (we're talking a 20 year old
beater here) 'It couldn't do that even if I threw if off a cliff!'. Not
guilty!

0-60 times are only a big deal to young guys that read lots of car buff
magazines, but have actually owned few vehicles and have limited driving
experience.

Lots of talk...little connection to real world driving.

Having owned several diesel cars myself and driven thousands of miles in
them, including the Sierra Nevada and Rockie mountains during ski trips,
the power of a diesel is "enough" if you're a good smart driver, that
anticipates traffic conditions and thinks ahead.

Somehow professional diesel truck drivers manage to get coast to coast,
with very slow 0-60 times...

If you're talking about me specifically, or generalizing me with these
"young guys who read car buff mags" (which I am... I read Car and Driver,
Motor Tread, and Road and Track, as well as the "Wheels" section in the
Toronto Star newspaper) please be aware that I am quite content with my
diesel... I KNOW it's a slow car, and I will be the first to point it out to
people.... because I know what it is capable of and when to pass and when I
just don't have the run up room I still get ahead to destinations faster
then my friends who drive bigger more powerful cars then I have... I'd get
blown away in a race, but on the street you aren't racing anyone and the
diesels do fine. I'd rather have my 6L per 100Kms then a 6 second time to
100pkh.

I just miss driving a powerful inline 6 Volvo some days when I really want
to pass 5-6 cars being held up by one slow guy.

I agree. When I read magazines, I am amused by some comments that the writers
make. They bitch about poor 0-60 times in a pick-up or mini-van. Acceleration
times should be an issue in a sports car, or even a sports sedan...but what
relevance is there in big luxury cars, economy cars, or utilitarian vehicles
like vans.

The only issue I had when I hit the big mountains out west, was that the engine
got HOT going up those big old mountains, and cooked some already near death
glow plugs. It was a good thing I stayed on top of a hill that night, as I
needed a good downhill coast to get the car fired up on a cold day with no glow
plugs! (1 or 2 may have still been working)
