I recently won an ebay auction for a hypertech programmer for my 2002
avalanche. When I got it, the guy that sold it to me had not deprogrammed
his vehicle with it before selling it, so I can't use it. I'm trying to get
it straightened out with the guy, but obviously he knew what he was doing
when he sold it, so what can you do, u know what i mean? Anyways, does
anyone know of a way to deprogram one of the programmers and erase the VIN
number that is stored in its memory? I figure the info is stored on a chip,
and there is probably a way to erase the chip.

in reference to the original post: throw the POS away and leave your
vehicle the way it was built!! detroit has been building cars longer
than you have been breathing. if you want performance buy a pre-emissons
car!

I too have purchased one, and had the same problems. So after taking a little look at the unit this is what i found. there are 3 removable chips on the inside of the unit. the first has a tag on it saying it's make and model. This chip contains the programming features. the second chip is the engine of the unit, controls the sending of the information. the third chip is under the display unit, and it is manufactured by spansion
it is a memory chip. most likely where your VIN and vehicle specific information is held, when the unit starts up it finds around 520 kb of memory, and this exactly what this chip has. AM29F040B-90JC is the part number. Without having the ability to erase this chip, you could just replace it with a blank one. take a small screw driver, pop out the old one. order a new one with NEWARK INONE for like 3.00 us bucks, a little shipping pop in the old one, presto, like new. And no soldering, there all compression held. Im not sure if this works on all units. But if it does, then after you get done programming your vehicle, you cold put a new chip in it, and start with somone elses. and when you want yours back just put your chip back in. The chips are only like $3.00 each. Give it a try.

Very good tip!!! I bought a used one from Ebay a few years ago and I had no problems because the seller had deprogramed the truck and I made it clear that I wanted it that way. Hypertech will not reset a used one unless you are original owner which sucks. Kinda foolish to sell unit and keep program though because the beauty of the hyper tech is that you can tweak speedo and such easily (one reason I got mine) and when you sell unit you might as well dump program to because if a dealer ever reading ECM and reprograms it the tune is gone. I always roll my tune back to stock if my truck goes in for warranty work.

unfortunately that information is burned into a chip in the http://www.speedyperformanceparts.com/huskyliner_p.html (Hypertech), you'd have to send it in to them, so basically you got screwed.
