Hello,

I recently bought a set of preassembled Vortec Heads. I will be
running a comp cams 274xe cam and they recommend the following
springs.....

981-16 1.250'' Diameter Single Outer Spring w/Damper. Valve Lift up
to .490''. 110# @ 1.700'' Closed, 285# @ 1.250'' Open, Coil Bind @
1.130''

The springs that where supplied have the following specs...

130# @ 1.800, 350# @1.200, and coil bind at 1.500

So I am wondering should I use the valve springs that are on the heads
or go with the recommended springs?

Thanks

I know what they will say. "Buy our springs and install them".
And looking at the specs, I would agree. Too much spring pressure for
the cam.

Exactly, and it isn't because they want you just to buy their springs. A
lot of metallurgy and engineeering goes into designing cam lobe profiles and
pressure of the valve springs is one of those factors. The springs in those
heads are not far from Comps advice but why risk hurting a lobe?

what about the coil bind ratings. 1.500" versus 1.130"? That is quite a
difference.

Yes there is a difference but the lift of the cam at the valve was something
like .490" or so. The springs should never even come close to anything like
a coil to coil contact.
