This is the 2.4 liter twin cam engine with the timing gear driven water
pump.

How do you get the timing chain tensoiner (hydraulic + spring) to re-tension
after reassembling the timing chain after a water pump replacement? The
tensioner pushed in easily with some spring tension, seemed to lock when
turned and now won't release or bounce out even after startup.

If your engine is like the Quad Four in my Grand Am you may benefit from
this procedure from the shop manual:

Reload timing chain tensioner assembly to its "zero" position as follows:

Form a keeper from a piece of heavy gage wire (figure in books shows that
it's U-shaped with a half inch between the legs of the U)

Apply slight force on tensioner blade to compress plunger.

Insert a small screwdriver into the reset access hole and pry the ratchet
pawl away from the ratchet teeth while forcing the plunger completely in the
hole.

Install the keeper between the access hole and the blade.

Install tensioner assembly to chain housing.

Recheck plunger assembly installation; its is correctly installed when the
long end is toward the crankshaft.

Install tensioner bolts (don't forget to remove the keeper now).

I know this post is a little old, but there seems to be a disreprency, as there are different types of tensioners. That little piston assembly is like a hydraulic lifter, it's gotta be primed. If it's already stuck together, do like I did- if there is any thing to grab on to ie; the little plunger, grab it with a vice and rotate the outer cylinder, and pull, it should pop apart. I did this and installed it, but it collapsed again, so far that I couldn't get a hold of the piston the second time, so I just threw it on the concrete in anger, and it popped out. It was then that I noticed the little holes in the piston, they relieve the extra oil pressure and probably allowed the oil to leak out while you had the engine apart.
I took the little gadget and put it in some motor oil and pumped it in small increments, you'll notice it will suck oil in and get stiff. gettin it in after that was a little tough, just cram it up in there and use a screwdriver against the timing chain casing to move it around until you get the bolt holes lined up. I hope this helps someone
