This has been fdriving me nuts!

1993 Cutlass supreme wit the 3.1L. At normal idle with the AC off, the idle
will swing from 800 to 100 back and forth til it stalls. I have checked the
PVC, O2 sensor, wiring, and pack. The IAC seems to be okay, I pilled it out
and cleaned it and reset it. No codes on the ODB.

What have I missed?

My '94 is ding the opposite. It ranges from normal up to about 1800 rpm
while idling.
No codes and doesn't always do it.

My 90 Cutlass with the 3.1 did the same thing. Would idle when cold but
the warmer it got the more it stalled. Would always start right back up.
Had a strong "rotten egg" smell at idle too.

After checking all the easy things (ignition, vacuum lines, fuel pressure),
I pulled the plenum off and checked the injectors. I had one completely
dead injector and another with lower flow that the rest. Never had any
codes set.

I visited my local junkyard and got 4 injectors for $20.00 (got a couple of
extras), replaced the bad ones and now the engine runs like a champ.

Since I had one cylinder pumping only air into the exhaust the computer was
trying to compensate for all that oxygen by richening the mixture, which
caused the engine to die at idle.

Good Luck,

Dave in Columbus

My '91 has a similar symptom: when the temperature dial reaches about
120 degrees, the engine stalls and won't crank again until the temp
gauge falls. Could this be an injector problem?

It sounds like the Crank Position Sensor.

My Chevy Cavalier was doing that and I changed the Throttle position sensor
which on mine was located at the front end of the throttle body and it fixed
the problem. The part was about $50.00 from Schucks Auto.

My 91 Olds 3.1 was doing the same thing. Turned out to be two bad
injectors. Replaced them and it's running like a top.

These vehicles I believe have a idle relearn process if battery has been
disconnected or has discharged. You must have a scan tool to perform
this operation or there is a lengthy process to go through without it..
