Archived from groups: alt>autos>acura (more info?)

Hi All,

I am considering buying a new/used Acura TL...My only reluctance is the
well known transmission problems..I have an MDX so I am somewhat familiar
with the recalls and such....I have not had any tranny problems with the
MDX other than having the oil jet installed but I am leery of purchasing
another Acura and possibly having much aggravation...I am also considering
a Lexus ES300 but they also have problems relating to hesitation when u
stomp on the gas....a drive by wire issue I believe it is....

Comments anyone? Would you buy another Acura or move to something
else...Accords are another possibility but again there is that tranny
issue...Wake the hell up honda and fix these problems once and for all....

I just *today* picked up a 2002 TL-S. I did lots of research, and while yes
it does appear to have transmission problems in some cases the warranty on
the transmission has been extended to 7 years/100k miles. This one has 35K
and is flawless. This is my third Acura after owning 2 legends. I test drove
a 2002 RL, which was nice, but to be honest, the TL-S is a lot more fun to
drive and 5K less. This car has absolutely no hesitation whatsoever; it's
almost hard not to peel out with all the sand on the roads Wink I read about
50 private reviews probably all but about 5% completely raved about the car,
and reviews on MSN cars are very favorable.

Gary,

I think it was this site that gave me pause.....

http://tl.acurazine.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=6

The problem is the internet makes the problem seem more pervasive than it
really is.....It would be interesting to know just what percentage have
had to replace their tranny....

My '01 TL tranny was checked at 70,000km and it's fine. I wonder if
the problem is less pervasive in Canadian TLs?

Not necessarily. My '01 TL tranny was replaced at 48,000 kms and I know
someone who had his replaced at 110,00 kms (also a '01 TL). We both noticed
that the replacement transmission is much smoother, particularly when cold.

Understandable, but I agree the internet can apply bias...anyone whose had a
bad experience with a web connection wants to vent. All I can say is mine
feels rock solid. I would be interested in the real failure rate as well.

Definitely. An important piece of information would be whether a large
number of the suspect transmissions were reaching normal service lives or if
most were failing in an abnormally short interval. The first would suggest a
problem in manufacture or installation (or even an unidentified problem in
the way they were used, such as progressive damage during idling in neutral
or something like that), while the second would suggest a fundamental design
problem. It would be good to see Honda/Acura get a handle on the situation.

The '93 and '94 Volvo 850 had a design problem - excessively tight
tolerances somewhere - and exhibited a nearly 100% failure rate within 5
years. From what I see, that isn't the case with these trannys.

We had a 1993 850 GLT that did 110k miles in ten years with no automatic
transmission failre. Did replace the range switch at about 100k though.

I have an '04 TL that I bought in May & have over 18k on it and the tranny
has been flawless. I have not received any recall notices either.

Here's a real failure rate quoted from an LA times article:

The two transmissions are the five-speed used in V-6-equipped Acuras since the 2000 model year and in Honda Odysseys since the 2002 model year; and the four-speed automatic used in V-6 Honda Accords since 2000 and in 2000 and 2001 Odysseys.

Of 1 million vehicles sold in the U.S. with those transmissions, Spencer said, Honda has replaced the transmissions in about 16,000, or 1.6%
