Ok, so I've been able to do some testing and the metallic tapping on startup
in my 99 Altima definitely seems to be coming from the exhaust side of the
engine, about halfway down. Somewhere in the general area of the O2 sensor.
It seems to be worst when started cold on warm summer mornings.
I'm thinking the only way to get it looked at is going to mean leaving it
somewhere overnight, but before I do that, is anyone willing to suggest if
this type of sound could be caused by anything else in this area but a valve
out of adjustment? I haven't been able to hear it by listening over the
valve cover, but with all the other sounds under the hood it's hard to
pinpoint where any one sound is coming from.
It's a fairly light, unmasked metallic rapping noise so I'm hoping it's not
something too serious. I had the oil changed last week with no change in
the symptoms.

How many KMs on it, and is it burning any oil?

Sounds like it might be the timing chain. If so, it's not much to worry
about.

Check all the heat shields on the exhaust system. One or more brackets
may have rusted off causing the loose shield to rattle when first starting.

Sorry, meant to mention that -- it's got 94,000 km and hasn't been burning
any oil that I've noticed.

That was the only thing aside from valves that I could think of... but it
sounds like it's coming more from the exhaust side of the engine rather than
from over around the timing chain, although I guess depending on what the
chain was hitting it could sound like it was coming from any number of
places.
This tapping is quite well defined though, I would expect the chain to make
sort of a threshing sound, and the sound I get is a clean tap tap tap...
probably at a rate of 4 or 5 a second for 2 or 3 seconds.

Maybe I'll get a mic out there some morning and post a link to a recording
of the sound.

I checked the exhaust out and couldn't find anything loose, and nothing
rattles if I give the downpipe a good smack with my fist from under the car.

I'm pretty sure it's an internal thing because (and I meant to mention this
originally) if I pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the starter until the oil
pressure light goes out, and then start the car, there's no sign of the
tapping.

Thanks for the replies.

almost sounds like a problem 80's pathfinders have where the exhaust studs
broke off inside the head, making a rattle sound on cold startup and going
away when warm

What type of oil filter are you using? Purolator PureONE?

Nope, it's only ever had real Nissan filters from the dealer since I've had
it. They're white with red writing, for some reason unlike the blue on blue
ones they installed on my 94.
