I am looking at a 1992 Infiniti G20. The original engine had 152,000 miles
on it. The owner has put in a NEW engine, not rebuilt. This engine has
34,000 miles on it. Because he is a friend of a friend, I got him down to
$2,000 for this car. It appears in great shape, he just wants a newer
car.

Any opinions? Is it worth it? What problems can I encounter mechanical
wise on this type car??? Thanks in advance!!

If you like it, it's a good deal. Judge by the overall condition. Remember
that if you need to bring a car that age to the Infiniti dealer to get some
injectors replaced, it could run more than $2000 easily, so having a new
engine is a big factor.

It would cost more than that to buy a similar car from a dealer, and would
not have a new engine. It would cost less than that from a private party,
BUT would not have a new engine. If the vehicle itself had only 34k on it,
that would make it a good price by any standard. If you split the difference
on the mileage adjustment for the book value, $2,000 is on target.

But book value only means so much. If you bought something similar with an
old engine, but saved $500, would you end up spending that much on
maintenance anyway? Infiniti would charge more than that for the scheduled
maintenance with your tune up, and with this one, you won't need that for
years. And that's assuming that nothing is even wrong with it. Then again,
you may do all the maintenance yourself, but I suspect that if you did, you
would already have an answer.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
