Ok- so i'm considering purchasing my next project. I've always wanted a
stude wagon, and now i have the option to buy a 61 lark 4 door wagon. It's
very solid, has a ohv six that's blown up with 3 speed standard. My plan
would be to put the 185 flathead six and three speed overdrive trans that I
have already in it. Other than that, not too many other plans right now. It
would need a few things- taillights and windshield being the biggest two.
Anyone out there have a 61 that they drive, or 61 parts cars? Also, i've
seen some pics in TW of 61 larks with hood ornaments- how rare are they?
Thanks in advance, Evan

Evan,
I have a 61 2dr Wagon, that I used to drive to college. I has a 170 cu
in. with 3 spd OD. When I got it the only options that the car had was
undercoat and climatizer. The best thing I did to the car was install
overdrive. You aren't going to win any drag races, however I once beat
a #hevy truck off the line. Tail lights are next to impossible to
find. I replaced mine with 59s. Hood ornaments are fairly easy to
find just check ebay, I believe that there is one on there now.

My daily driver is a 61 Cruiser, 259/AT 112,000 A/C have the original
window sticker came with factory air sold new in CA now in AZ. Anytime
you see a taillight on ebay snag it if you can at a price less than
100.00. I drive 3 miles to work. I have taken it also on the road a few
times. No Problems. 59-61 Larks used the same hood ornament. Mine has
one and also has original interior save for new cloth inserts put in
about 10 years ago.

Kelly Marion also has a 61 Regal 4 door that he is putting in a 194 65
Studebaker Mckinnon six here in Tucson.

I have a 61 VIII Regal 4 door, no ac. Strong 259 and automatic tranny.
Trying to figure out how to get the oil plug out of the head so I can make
the new oil filter I just got function. Solid car, only surface rust on the
floorboards. Seats will need a total rebuild, needs new carpeting and the
headliner is starting to split pretty well above the back seat. I guess
that will happen at the same time I decide to get new window seals. Yup,
tail lights are hens teeth. Last one I saw on ebay went for 150.00. I was
extremely lucky in that one of my local club members found one NOS in his
shop and sold it to me for 35 bucks! Now I need to find another one or try
like hell to repair one of the two that came with the car - both work, just
not pretty.

BTW, on the tail lights: do not take your car through an automatic car
wash. I had one break and one crack after all the years on the car. I
wash it by hand now.

Thanks for the info guys- I am going to have a look at the car in 2 weeks
and decide then, but i'm pretty set on it- unless there are huge problems
with the car- but I'm not anticipating that because i have been WELL
informed about the car. Here are a few questions- does anyone have an extra
steering wheel for one? Also- i realize the taillights are rare- can you use
59-60 ones in their place? Thanks in advance, Evan

Evan,

I think you can use '59-'60 lights if you also change the mounting
plate/socket assembly.

Does a '61 have the same dash as a '62?

Bob,
How many rows of tubes does your radiator in your Lark have?
