The word from him what knows (Jamie Porter at www.alfaworkshop.co.uk)

1) Running with a faling variator will no damage your engine
2) It will, however, damage your image, cos it sounds like a knackered taxi,
and will reduce in a noticable power reduction.
3) It has no bearing on the cambelt and vice versa.
4) You should be aware that the fact that the variator is failing *may*
indicate that the cambelt change performed last may not have been as
thorough as it may have been. Really all the belts and tensioners should
be done, and there is no point in *not* doing the variator while you're
there. It's possible that the tnesioners have not been done.
5) Total job cost (belts, tensioners variator and everything) is roughly
£450 Much cheaper than a new engine though.
6) Mine is going in next month.......
