I have a 1998 Alfa 156 with original keys which have faulty remote buttons.

The micro switch which is activated by the rubber button on the key has
fallen apart from wear and tear (both keys!), and can't be repaired (I've
tried).

I'm looking at getting a second had key so I can salvage the remote circuit
board and have the remote "recoded", but would like to know if any one knows
to process to "recode" the remote. I expect it's a matter of pairing it with
the remote/alarm system in the car?!

Any advice repairing the key remote, or recoding a second hand key would be
appreciated, as a new key and recoding through a Alfa dealer will cost
NZ$370 +GST.

Cheers.

Ring up keycutter. They told me that some 3rd party companies only charge
$100 or so for a cheap version.

A reputable locksmith here in Christchurch, New Zealand, can easily cut a
new key and recode the "Alfa Code" immobiliser for less than NZ$100, but
won't touch the remote central locking which also controls the alarm.

Surely the '98 key is no different to the '99 '00 keys?
The car programs the key when you insert it into the ignition.
The battery fob remembers the code to unlock and start the car.
Each time the key is used to start the car a new code is generated.
