Post subject: auto transmission

My 99 legacy auto estate (130,00 miles) has a binding/graunching noise when starting to reverse, just when the drive is first taken up. Once rolling along in reverse there doesn't seem to be a problem. Auto box works ok otherwise. I've found what appears to be a lot of radial play between the front diff and the output shafts.
Any ideas on the noise and possible fixes?
