We just bought a '98 CRV EX, and since it's cold here, I'd rather not
slip the dash apart to determine whether the (factory) single CD is
equipped with the round DIN jack, or the rectangular style that uses a
blue plug.

I have a cassette to stick in the storage hole under the CD, but it's
out of a '97 CRV, and has the round DIN jack.

Anybody know?

Seems from what I see that validates and answer to your question is that
97-98 stereos won't fit 99 and later models and vice versa. To be sure, why
not just call the parts dept at your nearby Honda dealer.....or use the live
chat link at www.handaaccessories.com
to get your answer from the parts guru there.
