i just bought a 2006 xrs.
it's the 2ZZ-GE engine with the 6 speed.
it's redline is 8200 and it's pretty tame to about 7000 then all hell breaks
loose
and it really comes to life.
that's where the 6 speed comes into use, to keep it in these rpm ranges.

is there any info on the net as to what is happening to change things at or
near this
rpm area?
it's gotta be more than just 'coming on the cam' .
i notice a port, or something, opening on the intake box at a lower rpm, (by
sound).
i'd like to learn more about this engine.

Monkey wrench racing has some stuff for the 2zz-ge engine, too.

Some early twin cam 4AGE Corolla engines had the Toyota Variable Induction
System. Basically, there were 2 sets of intake runners with different
diameters. At lower RPM, air entered the engine through the narrower intake
runner so that it would enter at a higher velocity and mix with the fuel
more efficiently. At higher RPM, air entered through the secondary runners
to improve breathing.
