Post subject: XKR Front End Vibration
Archived from groups: alt>autos>jaguar (more info?)

I'm getting some rather noticable vibration in the front end of my
2002 XKR. It's slightly noticable at lower speeds, but becomes very
noticable at 75 MPH. The 18" original "dual 5" wheels have no flat
spots and the tires are new and precision balanced.

I bought Falken tires to replace the Continentals that were on it. My
Jag dealer suggested that Michellins would get rid of the vibrations.
I find it hard to believe that only one brand of tire is correct for
the XKR.

Anyone out there have or had vibration problems with XKRs? I'd be
very, very grateful for any feedback. Thanks WJR

Just from personal experience on my mercedes, vibration is not
necessarily coming from the front tires. Where do you feel the
vibration in your seat or in the steering wheel?

The vibration is almost 100% in the steering wheel. At 75MPH one can
see it.

Hmmm. I cannot think of anything other than balance or simply a bad
tire that would cause this. (perhaps someone else with more knowledge
than I, can?).

Have you rotated the tires front to back to see if the problem goes
away or moves?

Thanks for the input. The tires balance perfectly and are nice and
round. I can't rotate them front to back because the rear tires are
larger.

How do you know they are "nice and round"? Also it is possible to get vibration
from tires due to differences in sidewall stiffness that would not show up as an
imbalance or out-of-round condition. There are balancers now with load-roller
devices that can detect this. See example at link below.

Thanks, I'll see if there is one in my area.

My front end vibration on a 1999 XKR was a sticking front brake caliper,
there was only a very slight pulling effect on braking from normal speeds so
could easily get overlooked. Worth an investigation, the Jag part was
expensive, but the work can be done by a local garage or DIY.

Best of luck.

I believe it is either uneven tire wear, sidewall anomalies, or sticking
brake calipers.

Thanks, Alan. I'm going to put a set of Micelins on it and we'll see
how that goes.
