i took the car over today - they found a slight leak in the pump, which
supposedly caused the brake fluid to leak too - I did a complete service,
which was overdue, and they told me the belts, everything else were fine.
They said the noise may be there for the next 100,000 miles but said it's in
perfect condition - thoughts?

yes, i think they're blowing smoke - hondas don't make noises like that
normally, and if they do, they certainly won't last for 100k miles.
if the pump seal is leaking, it's not long after that until the bearing
goes. then the timing belt goes and you lose valves/pistons in your
interference engine.
find a different mechanic and get a second opinion.

Modern Honda 4 cylinder engines use a timing chain, not a replaceable
timing belt. The V-6s still use a belt. >> Stay informed about: 2003 Accord Whirring Noise in Engine? |

Change they did. Honda's current 4 cylinder engines use a timing chain.
Many customers are really unhappy about having to pay for costly
timing belt replacements and thus many companies are going back to
timing chains. >> Stay informed about: 2003 Accord Whirring Noise in Engine? |

it's bizarre that in a time of improving emissions control,
manufacturers would do that. as chains stretch, valve timing drifts and
so consequently, does emissions. belts don't stretch ans remain dead-on
accurate through their whole service life.
and car owners getting ripped off by unscrupulous dealers and repair
shops for over-expensive belt changes if not going to disappear because
of a chain - there will always be something else to hose the customer with. >> Stay informed about: 2003 Accord Whirring Noise in Engine? |

you'd better hope you're right! when timing belts fray, they /do/ make
a whining noise. ignoring that costs real dollars. >> Stay informed about: 2003 Accord Whirring Noise in Engine? |
