Had my Trooper from new in 2000, 43k miles on the odo, auto
transmission. Three times now over a period of a month I've started it
up in the morning and every gearshift (up or down) is accompanied by a
'clunk' with a bit of a jolt. When I start it up in the evening after
work, it shifts smoothly and normally. I also noticed one morning that
the 'D' light wasn't on, so I jiggled the gear lever and the lights
didn't seem to reflect what gear it was in, ie when it was in D, the R
light was on and when I shifted the gear lever to 2, the P light came
on. After a bit of jiggling the lights settle down to display normally.
Don't know if these symptoms are related, but seems to be a
coincidence. Anyone had anything similar?

Don't know how similar the Trooper is to the rodeo but sounds like the
same issue my gf is experiencing. In the above link, post #114, problem
is described as a faulty mode sensor.
The above link is primarily for the rodeo. There may be a trooper forum
as well.
best of luck

Excellent, that sounds exactly like what's happening to me. Thanks very
much for the info, I'd rather be informed when talking to the service
guys than not.

If you don't mind I'd be interested in hearing what your service guys
have to say. The service guys at the local stealer said it would cost
around $350 to replace. I got the impression from the other forum that
the part is ~$90. I'm pretty sure I can handle two bolts, a nut and an
electrical connector. I've crawled up under cars for far less than $260.

OK, I'll be contacting them later this week. When I've got their
verdict I'll add a post here.
Thanks

have had my '99 Trooper since new with 55k miles. Last week mine started
same problem you have. Very erratic - but like yours it's only in the
morning -- anytime after that it runs smoothly. We changed the trans
fluid first but didn't help. Left it at the dealer tonight so they can
start it cold tomorrow. Said it could be one/two things depending on
whether or not the rpms spike when it clunks - they do not. Did you find
out what is wrong with yours? >> Stay informed about: Weird auto tranny problem 00 Trooper |

I called the Isuzu dealer and they agreed it sounded like the sensor.
They looked it up and the price they quoted was $130 for the part + 1.5
hours labor, for a total of $275. Unfortunately it's not covered by the
drivetrain warranty, but they'll be fixing a slight oil leak from the
rear differential under warranty and doing a 45K service so I decided to
get them to fix the sensor too.
Thanks for your help

If/when I decide to have the stealer replace the sensor on the rodeo
I'll be sure to let him know that I expect to see the removed part.
Apparently the sensor can be removed, cleaned and reinstalled and work
fine for many more miles. You might consider doing the same. Best of luck.

And there is always the chance that the one they show you is one they
pulled from another Trooper that they couldn't clean up and reinstall.
They keep that one to show the folks that ask to see the old part.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Weird auto tranny problem 00 Trooper |

Not if I write my name on it with a Sharpie or find some other means of

Well the Trooper went in today, and they replaced the sensor for $272.00
and all seems well. They also fixed a slight oil drip from the rear
differential under warranty.
