Having had a MINOR head injury myself (and family members that have had
SEVERE head injuries), I can kind of speak from experience.
I suffered a cerebral contusion (bruised brain) in January of 1990. I
was in the hospital for a couple of weeks, then at rehab for a month.
I was 23 at the time, so age was on my side, and after some in home
therapy, I was soon back to work. BUT it was a LONG time before I
really felt fully recovered. Wayne's injury was MUCH more severe, and
age is NOT in his favor. My guess is that there may be a lot of subtle
things different about him that we as TV viewers can't see. Poor short
term and possible long term memory issues, mixing facts and figures and
so forth. With the pressures involved with being a crew chief on a top
fuel car, my SUSPICION is that Wayne's return was FAR too early. While
I don't know the man, I'm glad to see him leave.....for his own best
interest. Drag racing is a great sport, but I don't want to see him
sacrifice his life for it! I wish Wayne the very best in his continued
rehabilitation (assuming that is what he is up to). Of course I do
hope to see him back at the track, but only when he is 100% able to
return, and enjoying it.
