It has been the practice of automakers of making everything bad and no
standardisation.
As a result of this most things in cars are breaking and you have to
get spare parts that only fits your car.
Not from other models and not from the same model made another year.
It has been a producers market.
They do what they want and they make most of their money from
maintenance and spare parts.
The consumers want reliable cars and pay as little as possible.
Noone is creating such cars and all there is available is expensive,
unreliable and complex.
Consumers started to be interested in electrics because they promise
to be less complex and more reliable.
GM like many others create an electric which insidentally is not
leectric but more of the same.
The hybrids are not electrics.
Ordinary old type cars as well as hybrids are complex system and have
more than 1000 moving parts and they are more or less badly made and
unreliable.
Electric cars promise to become a lot less complex and for a good
reason.
They have basically only a handful and in theory only 4 moving parts.
It is a lot more difficult to make an unreliable electrical car and it
is difficult to make it so unreliable that everything brakes down
after a few years.
Withh true electric cars comes cheap maintenance and the total cost of
ownership will go dramatically.
The profits of makers of true electrics will be a lot less because
there is not so much in making spare parts.
There are not so many parts to make and eventually they will be more
or less standardized.
GM and many of the old style manufacturers are fighting this trend
like crazy and no wonder.
We the consumers are looking forward to more of the electrics and more
power over the manufacturing.
The number of electrical cars is very limited and will remain so for a
long time and it will be difficult to change that but it will happen.
The people repairing old type of cars do not like this trend either.
There are actually a hell of a lot of people fighting against this
trend.
Even with all the people bad mouthing electrics and creating myths
about troubles with this technology the trend is sure to continue and
take over eventually because of the obvious benefits.
How long it will take is anyones guess but as more and more electrics
become available the sooner it really will take off and the
infrastructure will also change.
It will change the way we live and where we live too.
Are the hybrids good or bad?
I am not sure but I think they are mostly a bad idea but have some
good points at least plugins so is the Volt a good idea or not?
As far as GM is concerned it is the only idea but it is surely too
little and too late to save GM.
Would a true electric version of the Volt save GM?
I do not think so.
GM is too much into old type manufacturing, thinking and can not
change fast enough to survive and will either die again or become a
lot smaller and insignificant.
