CAGW President Tom Schatz appeared this morning on ABC’s Good Morning
America in a piece by ABC’s Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian
Ross
exposing the fact that auto executives flew to Washington, D.C. in
private
corporate jets to beg for a taxpayer-funded bailout. In addition,
the
United Autoworkers Union (UAW) has stated it will not modify
contracts or
relinquish benefits in order to give automakers the flexibility to
restructure and retool.

“Both sides are to blame for the failure of the domestic
automakers.
Neither executives nor the union is willing to acknowledge
culpability,
nor will they give up their perks and benefits to help dig out,”
said CAGW
Tom Schatz. “Instead, they have their hands out for a taxpayer-
funded
golden shovel.”

General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner received a 64 percent salary
increase to
$15.7 million in 2007, when the company was shutting down plants
and
posted a $39 billion loss.

It was a rather dumb move. After the publicity of the AIG parties you'd
think these guys would have enough brains to fly commercial for such a trip.
Image matters.

Of course, it was shown that the AIG party was a long-planned gala
for CUSTOMERS and that there wasn't a hig-level AIG honcho in a 100 mile
radius. Although I would guess this is further proof that image (as
opposed to reality) matters.
However, I would have to agree that if you come with tincup in hand
it is best to not do so in a Ferrari.

anyone else remember back to the 70's when "The Peter Principle" was
the must-read business book, i.e. everyone rises to their own level of
incompetence.

I think that went by the boards when "Greed is Good" struck a responsive
chord.

There's a certain point where ego makes "perks" as important as
compensation.....some of these jerks think their dirt doesn't stink and
they are "entitled". Most of us start out to earn a living that allows
us to attain the life-style we desire, provide security for our families
and our own futures, and collect some toys along the way. It's another
"self-fulfilling prophecy" of our self-images. But there are those
whose egos know no bounds ......to some degree a good thing where
competition counts, but corporate culture has let it go unchecked.

Jack Welsh is still idolized as the ultimate CEO......when in many
respects he was just the schoolyard bully run amuck. Paid hundreds of
millions in salary, bonuses and stock options, his retirement package
includes lifetime use of GE condos, cars, private jets, vacations, etc.,
etc. In other words, he was motivated enough to be a ruthless tyrant,
rewarded by excessive compensation.......then doesn't have to spend any
of his own money. Why?

In 1980, a friend who was a GE employee took me to a warehouse and
showed me a stockpile of new '79 Town Cars.....purchased so GE execs
wouldn't have to suffer the indignity of being chauffeured around in
downsized Lincolns!

Car maker CEOs, AIG et.al. are just the tip of the iceberg. Will be
interesting to see what if anything will/can be done......while
thousands lose their jobs to leave enough cash to support excesses.

It's a red herring, GM owns the jet, they did not rent the jet and time is
money

How is this any different that enviro-freak celebrities who take
private jets to "green rallies." Or Al Gore who has a eco-disaster of
a home preaching about global warning. I wonder how the UAW big wigs
got to Washington. I also wonder how much the head of the UAW is
actually paid.

Is Wagoner overpaid? Not if he can save GM!

I definitely think Ford got it money's worth for Mulally. When the guy
first started closing plants, selling off stuff, and borrowing lots of
cash, I thought he was nuts. In fact everything he did was needed. The
problem is, if GM goes down, it will probably take Ford and Chrysler
down too.

I don't see how we can save all those banks that are clearly the cause
of the current financial crisis and not at least loan GM a few
dollars. I guess Republican bankers and stock brokers have a lot more
pull than a bunch of UAW workers.

The difference is that he should have know he was going to be under the
microscope.

His actions were stupid and arrogant., in light of his mission

He has not been able to "save GM", or show credible improvement.

sorry to be such a curmudgeon, but can't resist:

remember the old "Bell Hour" tv show of the 50s & 60s? I always
enjoyed the commercials, many of which were about wonderful new things
that Bell Labs was working on. One was the Picturephone......and the
prediction was that soon businesses could hold meetings by Picturephone
and eliminate wasteful travel !!!!! Well, we've gone well beyond that
with the internet.....and yes, a lot of low-level employees get to spend
hours at their workstations taking online courses and training. But
what wasn't factored-in was reluctance of the bigger cheeses to give-up
their hunger for "important" meetings and conferences, i.e. free travel,
free stays at more expensive hotels than they would pay for out of their
own pockets, free food & drinks, free golf etc., etc.

One more: I can remember a 6th grade field trip to IBM to see the new
"computer" (whatever that was) on display. Damn thing was a hundred
feet long and probably had less computing capacity than a pocket
calculator. Once we were introduced to the basics of what the computer
could do, we had a discussion on possible future applications. One
example was how the streets would have sensors to monitor traffic, then
the computer would control the traffic signals to keep traffic flowing
as smoothly as possible, shortening our travel time and saving gas
wasted at red lights. 50 years later, it still takes an hour to drive
10 miles to work, but they can automatically send you a ticket if you
slid thru a yellow light !!!!!

Damn, I'm gettin old.

Owning a jet is very very expensive.
News at noon said that GM and Ford are claiming they could run out of money
in the very near future. Sell the f***ing jet.

The guy that hurt Ford was Nasser. When he took over from Fred Pauling
Ford was selling seven of the top ten vehicles in the US

To whom? Everybody is in trouble today, including the speculators who
caused the worldwide down turn buy sucking up too much of the worlds
discretionary spending money in too short of a period. LOL
