Does anyone know how much you can narrow a VW torsion bar IFS and
still have it remain functional?

Stress-wise, you can shorten the bar length (from the center) down to
zero without breaking anything (unless you hit a bump...). However, the
wheel rate is inversely proportional to the length. i.e. if you reduce
the length from the centerline to the trailing arm from 20" to 10", the
front end will be twice as stiff. Besides changing the ride, the
stiffer it is, the more understeer you'll get.
