| Is a loose plastic undertray common on the 156? Mine has been hanging down
for a few thousand miles. I have to approach speed humps slowly then
accelerate over them to lift the front of the car!
Is it an expensive fix at an Alfa dealer?

Sounds like your tray is "partially-sh*gg*d", a condition well known
to 156 owners. Let me re-phrase that - the condition applies to the
tray, not the owner (we should be so lucky !). Condition caused by
speed-humps / bumps / traffic-calming (frustrating) measures etc.
etc.
Anyway, I digress :
You may be able to secure what's left of the tray with clips (to raise
it a little).
Otherwise, I guess a new tray's needed - sorry - no idea what they
cost.
I read somewhere that an aluminium tray is available - can't see the
point of this - surely a couple of speed-hump encounters would trash a
metal tray ?
BTW - what vintageis your 156 ? >> Stay informed about: Undertray |

For a piece of plastic, its ridiculously expensive! Mine is tied up
with cable ties as best as possible.

normal problem, mines missing totally!
think it's £85 for a plastic one, or £120 for an alu one, which apparently
are much much better, will be ordering one myself soon!

If the trays are this susceptible to dropping off then they can't be very
strong/tough, so I wonder how well they can protect anything. What damage do
they actually prevent, or what purpose do they serve? >> Stay informed about: Undertray |

It's a muck stopper, that's all. The prices match what I found out for
my TS. I never got round to fitting a new one. The old one has been
parked at the side of the house for about a year now.....

Mine's coming up for its seventh birthday. The dealer renewed some clips
at the first couple of services, but after that they either didn't
bother fixing them, or they just did it without mentioning it.

The rear fixings tend to break. I still have the original tray on my car
(2000 2.4JTD), but held on with cable ties at the back. This is easy enough
to do if you don't mind crawling underneath the car (suitably supported)
and/or taking off the front wheels.

There are two standard variants - a fibre one which breaks up when
damaged and is far too brittle. There's also a polypropylene (feels
like it anyway) one which appears to be indestructible - it just
gouges but doesn't break up.
